If it is helpful to other people here is how I manage my ebook library with flatfiles and heterogeneous devices (Android, macOS, iOS, Kindle, etc) I have my own eBook library hosted with copyparty. It is a single binary. Runs on plain files. And speaks OPDS for integration with KOreader (Kindle) or Readest (iOS/macOS). https://github.com/9001/copyparty#opds-feeds It also speaks webdav so I can quickly sync everything via rclone to an SD card on devices like an Android tablet. I really like the convenience of flat files and multiple protocols.

IMHO, there's a better answer to any thing you like about FTP. For simple stuff, TFTP seems... fine? I've never looked under the hood, but I'm pretty sure it fixes the really bizarre choices in FTP. For everything else, either SFTP or HTTP seems to be the rule. For moving files around between machines, I've become quite fond of https://github.com/9001/copyparty over http

Jellyfin is nice but I could never understand how to setup when all I wanted was to watch videos from server for example. So I used copyparty[0] and used VLC and set a username and password. I recommend copyparty if you just want something quick and easy actually. Just try it out on cheap VPS and just run it and forget it. https://github.com/9001/copyparty

“I like copyparty ( https://github.com/9001/copyparty ) - really dead simple to use and quick like FIleRun”

…ago, and unfortunately is not anymore. But it's worth the license if you have the money for it. I tried setting up SeaFile but I had issues getting it working via a reverse proxy and gave up on it. I like copyparty ( https://github.com/9001/copyparty ) - really dead simple to use and quick like FIleRun - but the web interface is not geared towards casual users. I also miss Filerun's "Request a file" feature which worked very nicely if you just wanted someone to upload a file to you and then be done.

...but the SMB implementation on macOS is shit. Try to browse any network directory with a non-trivial amount of files and see the whole Finder window just beach-ball or freeze. KDE has phone and laptop integrated well enough for me. It's worth giving it a try but the more devices you want integrated the more of a risk it is in case it doesn't quite work right. But I've got enough other devices in the house which I can't put KDE on (work laptop, Windows machine I need for some specific software) that I can recommend https://github.com/9001/copyparty over thumb drives.
