using BOSL2 alleviates most issues I've run into with OpenScad for chamfers and the like, but it is an extra set of functions you need to remember sadly https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2
“I wouldn't really consider using OpenSCAD without it”

I was in your shoes about a year ago with an A1 mini, getting into OpenSCAD to make my own keycaps. If you're getting into OpenSCAD I'd highly recommend getting Belfry ASAP. https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2/wiki I wouldn't really consider using OpenSCAD without it
“Yup, the attachments with BOSL2 are really great. You can do a ton without much math at all, TBH.”

BTW, if you want to design some models for 3D printing but the only thing you know to do is to code, you can use OpenSCAD & program the obejcrs into existence: https://openscad.org/ Also recommend using the BOSL2 library with OpenSCAD - it turnes an already very powerful tool into something insane: https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2
“It's super useful, been using with my 3D printer to print things”

It's super useful, been using with my 3D printer to print things such as an adapter to connect a Canon EF lens to night vision tube and parts to link motorised linear stages together. Currently I'm playing with a gear library which is part of BOSL2 ( https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2/wiki/gears.scad ), to make something to rotate a polariser in my microscope.

I thought so too but then I discovered the BOSL2 library and all kinds of others ... makes cubes with round edges so much easier :) https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2/wiki/Tutorial-Rounding_the_Cube

…define already defined variables and you'll get zero warning. The language itself is really pretty WTF. But you get modelling for free as a programmer. And LLMs are okay'ish at it for simple stuff. I'd recommend people to use the BOSL2 library for OpenSCAD: https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2/wiki It's really not hard. If you love programming and like to DIY stuff around the house, buying a 3D printer and learning some OpenSCAD is a no-brainer. OpenSCAD ain't the only option: many people like Fusion (for example). But as I'm a dev, OpenSCAD just feels natural to me.

I ended up adding the https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2 library to OpenSCAD and it had some reasonable options for some gear and rack-and-pinion modeling that I needed to do. (3D printing a sacrificial gear for a seat position adjustment mechanism)

…oach everything in OpensSCAD in a way that means I never have to experience that feeling again. I will also say that doing everything from scratch in OpenSCAD would be it's own special kind of hell. Libraries like [BOSL2]( https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2 ) provide a good set of core ideas and preferences that help set you on a good path. A good example: BOSL2 shapes tend to have a "center origin" by default, which is different than the OpenSCAD default, but makes doing transforms later way easier. Anyway, happy to see OpenSCAD getting some attention here :)
