I self-host Immich, and run the iPhone app to back up my photos. I used this guide [0] for the initial import. [0]: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/21251

“I use immich every day and I'm a big fan of it”

I use immich every day and I'm a big fan of it, but the search feature is dismal and still falls short of any other major image hosting provider: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/8377 The way that semantic search works, they don't cap a relevance score (since it's all relative), and they don't allow you to sort through some kind of time index either.

“I switched from Nextcloud Photos to Nextcloud Memories to Immich.”

I switched from Nextcloud Photos to Nextcloud Memories to Immich. I submitted a patch [1] to Immich to make it possible to directly login via (Nextcloud) OIDC which, in combination with the Nextcloud 'External Sites' app makes it possible to integrate Immich directly into Nextcloud. I do not automatically add all photo and video material synced to Nextcloud into Immich yet, relying on a set of scripts I've been using for years to maintain all our media in a single repository. It should be possible to either use Nextcloud to sync media which is then shown in Immich through its 'External Libraries' feature (this is how I use it) as well as to use Immich to sync media and access it that way. No…

“It’s literally open source.”

What are you talking about. It’s literally open source. Here’s the server code https://github.com/immich-app/immich/tree/main/server You run the server. You can make the entire thing e2e encrypted if you want. You could even set it up so that it could only backup over tailscale or wireguard through a tunneled connection so ALL of your traffic is e2e.

They've been around for a 3 years, which is not a very long time for FOSS. However the software seems stable, fast, it has lots of releases, all of which are good signs in terms of future availability. I forgot the name, but there is a software "law" that software that has been around for N years will probably be around for N more years (so the longer it's been around, the longer it will continue to be around). I see about 7 big contributors: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/graphs/contributors . I think most of them work for/are sponsored by FUTO: https://futo.org/about/what-is-futo/ And seeing the FUTO description, I like that. We need more of that :-) > FUTO is an organization ded…

Beware that migrating back from Immich to iCloud/Google is not something Immich cares about. There is no "download all" anywhere, best way is to go to the server and get raw files from there. https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/14365

“Dismissed just because AI was used.”

I know LLM generated code comes with it's own challenges, but the absolutists are definitely clinging to a time that has passed. I saw a recent discussion on Immich where a maintainer flatout denied a PR saying "That diff looks LLM-generated to me; is that indeed the case? If so, we'd prefer not to receive a PR for it" The PR was from a professional software engineer, who worked weeks of his free time on a big feature. Well structured + tested. Dismissed just because AI was used. https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/23745#discussioncomment-15987564

Yea sure Immich taking zero responsibility for possibly causing damages in hundreds of dollars and not warning their uses is fair, yeah, let them go. Maybe actually read the issues before judging? (oh noes, he blame them so he must be bad!) I don't get where you're coming from.

This is the one photo manager that I have my eyes on, I'm just worried about critical bugs, I've seen some issues reported on github with losing data, like this one on the mobile app. https://github.com/immich-app/immich/issues/21936 Not sure what to say, could be a very very rare edge case, but it's not very reassuring.
