Why SSH to the build agent when you can run your actions locally using the excellent https://github.com/nektos/act

You can run your own github actions compatible-ish server. https://github.com/nektos/act Personally my favorite is probably drone-ci. I'd suggest not buying in too hard on any one of these CI systems and just writing shell scripts. Shell scripts are portable, and you can use whatever to trigger them.

Would a tool like act help here? ( https://github.com/nektos/act ) I suppose orchestration that is hiding things from different processor architectures could also very well run differently online than offline, but still.

I guess it was only a matter of time... Part of this is fair since there is a cost to operating the control plane. One way around this is to go back to using check runs. I imagine a third party could handle webhooks, parse the .github/workflows/example.yml, then execute the action via https://github.com/nektos/act (or similar), then post the result.

I'm assuming the lockfile should be checked into the repo itself, which presents a bootstrapping problem if you have to run an action to create the lockfile in the first place. They may need to build proper support for running actions locally -- there is the third-party https://github.com/nektos/act tool which might be a starting point, but that's mostly designed so you can debug actions without having to repeatedly push and rerun. Probably they'll need a separate mechanism to statically analyze actions without running them.

“Act has never been in my opinion super great, but it's also been several years since I've checked in to revisit the project.”

a bold attempt, how does it compare with https://github.com/nektos/act which has been the de-jure project in this space? Act has never been in my opinion super great, but it's also been several years since I've checked in to revisit the project.
