I have been using Zed for about a year now on Debian 12 / Wayland and it works flawlessly. Even with Toshy (macOS) keybindings. I have it installed now on my Framework 13 Pro (also Fedora 44, and also with Toshy) and it works great aside from a subtle (100ms?) lag when using ctrl+arrow-key. Otherwise it is great. The only thing that doesn't work well is inertial scrolling[0]. But scrolling is a fucking shit show on Linux no matter what... so I don't necessarily fault Zed for this. The same issue occurs in other apps. - [0] https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/14473

Just injecting this here: What I've been missing is an equivalent for GitHub's "blame prior revision" feature to quickly follow through the history of individual source lines. https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/42583 Thanks for building an awesome product :)

“Huge thanks to the people behind Zed and Sublime for actively pushing in the opposite direction!”

I’m currently using a mix of Zed, Sublime, and VS Code. The biggest missing piece in Zed for my workflow right now is side-by-side diffs. There’s an open discussion about it, though it hasn’t seen much activity recently: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/26770 Stronger support for GDB/LLDB and broader C/C++ tooling would also be a big win. It’s pretty wild how bloated most software has become. Huge thanks to the people behind Zed and Sublime for actively pushing in the opposite direction!

This is high praise coming from an Emacs user :) I also formerly used Emacs with much joy, but I'm even happier with Zed now. Zed has a lot of issues in flight; maybe these are useful to you? Here are the issues that have been filed under the label "area:parity/emacs". Some also have the label "state:needs repro" (needs reproduction). I wonder if any of them scratch your itch? Weighing in might help get your pain points resolved a bit faster? https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aopen%20emacs%20label%3Aarea%3Aparity%2Femacs

Hi, I'm the author of the post. I hope it resonates with many who got tired of VSCode and found Zed. I'd also like to add there are many small features I miss in Zed that I don't go over in the post, e.g. autodetect and respect file's indentation ( https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/4681 ). But I see Zed is actively shipping the missing features, so I believe they'll improve significantly over the next year.

Zed looks and feels amazing to use. I test-drove it for a bit on my linux system, and the feel of it is difficult to convey to those who have not tried it yet. It's easy to overlook the significance of gpu accelerated editor - but I promise you, use it for a bit and you'll be sold. The only feature that is preventing me from switching to Zed is the current lack of DevContainer support[1]. After investing a significant amount of time perfecting a devcontainer (custom fat image with all tools/libs + config), it would be a large step backwards to go back to installing everything locally. There's a lot of eyes on this feature, so I'm hopeful it will be implemented in the future. [1] https://g…

“as a 10+ year Sublime user, Zed is the best of the more”

as a 10+ year Sublime user, Zed is the best of the more "modern" GUI editors I've tried. I haven't fully switched over to using it as my daily-driver because Zed's heavy reliance on GPU rendering means that it locks up every time I suspend & resume my Linux box [0,1] but I'm optimistic about the progress they're making on it. 0: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7940 1: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/23288

There is this big recurrent misunderstanding with zed's ToS that produces some extreme, misinformed reactions. Zed (the ide) is open source ("GPL v3 with Apache 2.0 for certain components"). The ToS are only applicable for the services they provide when you subscribe for an account and use them [0]. Some people read the ToS, think they apply just for the editor, and think that zed is stealing your source code and whatnot, because it would indeed be weird to have these ToS for just editing stuff locally, without any of the additional services provided. However, if one actually reads the ToS instead of nitpicking a paragraph, it is very clear what it is about. Any ToS for a company that you s…

…s a little tiring. I have been following Zed, and it seems that they have rearchitected things to enable adding Helix mode and making the editing model a bit more modular, but it's still fairly new. They are fixing bugs pretty quickly. I will have to try it again. They have a nice discussion here: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/6447 They reference Ki, which also looks cool, and they out some of Helix's inconsistencies in their comparison: https://ki-editor.github.io/ki-editor/docs/comparisons/ I prefered Kakoune to Helix (it was more consistent). But to your point, being able to swap these things out more easily would let you choose an editor based on features, and no…

Similarly, I had to stop using Zed because the main thread would beachball for > 30s when trying to work in large repos on macOS. This behavior was clearly reported to them in a GitHub issue that they also closed without fixing (because they believed a partial fix was sufficient, and have ignored subsequent comments to the contrary): https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/55746

I feel like I have to call out Zed for still having completely broken LLM support in almost entire continent of Asia for over a year now with no official response¹ just because they can't route http requests. Bad look for their LLM workflow push. https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/29962

Adding onto this I and many others have asked for a ui extension API to actually make use of AI tools and they've adamantly refused. Until someone else with the time and resources to fork and maintain it comes along, it's just in maintenance mode. These "AI" features are not useful at all. https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/53403#discussioncomment-17009389
